Introduction

“Gladiator was an example of the profit-oriented, collaborative filmmaking that tends to dominate mainstream film production in Hollywood” (Raw, 2009, p.140). This is an Epic historical film based on the Roman soldiers and their sacrifices for their country. The film is directed by Ridley Scott and the main cast includes Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralf Möller, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou,Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel and Richard Harris. Russell crow performed the role of a general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who was betrayed by Commodus, who killed his own father the emperor in order to get the throne. After killing his father he enslaved the faithful general Decimus Meridius. He also killed his family and in order to avenge his family and emperor through gladiator arena. The film was released in 2000 and was a big hit and winner of five Academy Awards.

Discussion

This film is based on the conflict between love and duty and the sacrifices of Roman soldiers in order to fulfill their duties and responsibilities towards their state. This film is the perfect presentation of the combat that resulted in the Etruscan era, the time when it was a custom of human sacrifices for the love of God (Scott, et.al., 2000).

Plot

The plot of the film is mainly focused on the Maximus a general who was chosen to be the heir of the Empire, but he was killed by his own son Commodus. With his power he condemned Maximus and his family to die and Maximus failed to save his family (www.imdb.com).
