Introduction

Globalization has affected the world on numerous factors such as economic development, technology, perceptions, vision and most important of the many factors is culture. The international exposure of different cultures through media has influenced other cultures with its consistency like a drop of water on a rock (Barker, 1999). America and Europe had been at the forefront on the technology and so has their influence over the cultures of the world. Nowadays one can find people dress like American and British around the world even in the least developed countries. The cultures which had a fresh experience with the American and British cultures are influenced the most.

As the UK or primarily English speaking European countries are no match of the size of the United States of America and is unable to compete the content generation in the same retrospect, it is evident that the influence or pressure of influence by the American culture on other cultures is profound.

We will be exploring the evening television listings of programs and will review their overall influence on the culture of Europe. We will then reflect upon the pro globalization and anti globalization arguments. We will then evaluate if the due to greater influence of United States, globalization is equal in meaning to Americanization of cultures.

The concept of culture globalization is referred to the communication and adaptation of values, meaning and ideas through the borders of a nation. The cultural globalization takes place due to the spread of ideologies and commodities, which over time and progression of technological awareness are becoming standardised. One of the most important medium of cultural transfer is the electronic media. The television, movies and internet are all playing a pivotal role in idealization and evaluation of cultural practices. Generations are adopting the culture they are being exposed to and more significant effect is noticeable in the younger generation. The most influential tool besides trade in promoting the culture has been the television. United States of America due to its huge trade volume and large television and film production has greatly influenced the international cultures, exposed them to new lifestyles, values, meanings and ideas. It is not surprising to find people echoing the values and traditions of US while living in least developed areas of world. The countries where the culture is strongly tied with the religion, the effect has not been too great while countries have been selective on the things to be adopted from the culture of United States. The globalization and United States being the one of the consumption market for international goods, has also created interest of the people in learning the cultural values of the US to cater the market requirements.
