Green Engineering and Energy Efficiency

Introduction

Energy crisis is undoubtedly one of the most discussed issues on the planet. A decade back or so, the abundance of the natural resources used in the generation of energy, in particularly electricity were very abundant. However, with the passage of time, the occurrence of two very obviously adverse phenomenon forced the scientist to think about better techniques for the generation of electricity. Firstly, the natural resources, including carbon, coal, and crude oil that are commonly utilized for the electricity production reduced significantly. Secondly, the severely damaged environment that occurred was the result of the various environment unfriendly procedures for the generation of electricity. Nevertheless, these two reasons made the scientists to search, analyze and evaluate the alternative sources and processes that are energy efficient besides utilizing the resources and optimizing their uses. This is when the concept of Green engineering was originated. The Green engineering simply dealt with the planning, implementing and evaluating the design, commercialization, and also the use of products and processes that are both economical and feasible thereby achieving aims that includes minimizing the pollution of the sources in addition to the threats to the environment and human health. The most important aspect of Green Engineering is the generation of renewable energy with the help of the renewable resources. This paper aims to discuss, analyze and evaluate the usefulness of different energy sources and discuss which of the many are more suitable and appropriate for the meeting the electricity demands of a hospital in addition to optimizing their designs in terms of environmental, social and economic areas of sustainability.

Discussion

There is no doubt in saying that a hospital requires much more energy to operate than any other organization. This is simply because of the fact that a hospital has a wide range of machinery and equipment serving different purposes. For instance, the various medical equipments including the life supporting systems, X-rays, ultrasound machines and so on are the machines that consume a huge amount of electricity and hence there is a requirement for a lot of resources to generate a lot of energy. In addition, the hospital organizations also maintains a database system for keeping and maintaining records of the patients, employees and everyone associated with the hospital. Therefore, it will be fair to say that choosing renewable energy sources for the generation of renewable energy will only help the hospital to not just save both energy and cost, however also adapt both environment friendly procedures.

Hence, it can be predicted that the hospital facility that currently depends majorly on the conventional sources such as natural gas, oil and coal for their energy production. Fossil fuels is also a non-renewable source, that is, these fuels draw on the finite resources which will ultimately dwindle, either becoming too environmentally dangerous to retrieve or too expensive.

The renewable sources will therefore produce energy that is effective, economical and sustainable. The term “sustainable” refers to the fact that energy produced by the ...
