Abstract

The popularity of wireless and mobile computing technology in the recent year has encourage the business organizations to migrate their computing infrastructure from tradition wired desktop computers to wireless and portable computing devices such as notebooks. The more flexibility and usability portable computer bring about, the more complex the nature of computing environment in an organization will be and there are several elements that need to should be taken into consideration when planning to migrate to portable computers. This paper attempted to identify those elements and proposes some suggestions that would enable the organization to take informed decision for realizing its plan of migration.

Migrating to Portable Computers

Introduction

The use of portable computers at the workplaces is an increasingly popular phenomenon. There are many factors that precipitated the need for replacing the conventional desktop computers with mobile and portable computers. The foremost of these factors is the ease of use, mobility and easy management of these computing devices. Mobile computers have already ceased to be an attribute of people who really need in a portable workplace, and gradually replacing traditional desktop PCs in offices and homes of users. This has led to more and more people are asking: What kind of portable computer to buy that fulfils diverse computing needs of entire organization?'

Traditionally, mobile computers are bought by people who want to take your computer with you, who need a portable workstation for the office, at home or on the road. Now the ratio for portable computers has changed so much that more and more people give them a preference, even if the computer will always be in one place, replacing the standard desktop PC. This happens for many reasons: high performance laptops have not much more expensive than conventional computers and their capacity is sufficient for most tasks.

There are many other questions that arise when an organization plans to replace its conventional desktop computers with portables ones. First, who should be included in the planning team which will be responsible for the assessing the needs of the users and then procurement of the equipment. There are also the question of ethics when it comes to using company provided portable computers for personal use or being engaged in social networking activities such as using Facebook and other social networking websites. The paper will attempt to address these questions.
