“History of the Internet”

Introduction

The Internet could be termed as the most commendable invention of the modern era. The seeds of the Internet were planted in the early sixties. It was the brainchild of some visionaries who believed in its idea. They thought networking computers together and allowing people to share information would change the way people communicate and interact with each other. However, the first person to propose the idea of creating a network of computers was Mr. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT. He proposed the idea and moved his operations to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) . In late 1962, he started working on it (Muller, 2010).

Mr. Leonard Kleinrock from UCLA is attributed to the development of packet switching which later formed the basis of Internet connections. The first successful attempt at linking computers was made by Mr. Lawrence Roberts of MIT. He succeeded at linking a Massachusetts computer with a computer in California in 1965 using dial-up telephone lines. It highlighted a major flaw in the system- that the telephone line's circuit switching was inadequate. On the other hand, Kleinrock's packet switching theory was confirmed. Roberts later moved over to DARPA in the year 1966 and developed his plan for ARPANET. So the Internet we use today is a result of the creative thinking of these three individuals who believed in their idea and made it a reality.
