History of the U.S. Marshals



Abstract

The U.S. Marshals (United States Marshals Service) is the institution responsible for the enforcement of federal court orders. In a broad sense ensures the functioning of the justice system. Over time, the officers have been required by the U.S. government to take over various historical events. Unlike the armed forces have been considered is the "civil power" of government officials and a local organization with federal regulation. It is part of the Department of Justice in that country. In this paper we try to focus on the United States Marshals Service. The paper discussed the history of the United States Marshals.



History of the U.S. Marshals

Introduction

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a federal police agency of the Department of Justice of the United States. Its members are commonly referred to marshal. The agency created on 24 September 1789 is one of the oldest federal agencies of the United States and is the armed wing of the federal courts. Its mission is the protection of the federal courts, transporting federal prisoners, the protection of threatened witnesses in a federal procedure, management of seized assets from illegal activities and the search and arrest federal fugitives. In 2003, the Marshals arrested 34,000 federal fugitives and aided in the capture of fugitives pursued by 27,000 local authorities. It has a response unit called Special Operations Group (Burton, 1991).

Background of the Marshals Body

The body of Sheriff is the oldest institution of this country, responsible for implementing the legal provisions issued by a governmental authority. He was born following a law issued by George Washington on September 24 of 1789 (Judiciary Act), which included the creation of other judicial officers. Two years later, were 16 the first sheriff elected for each judicial district of the young nation. Over the years the officers in charge of running the federal courts properly, from maintaining the vases filled with water at public hearings or to secure the attendance of witnesses, to execute the orders of death sentences.

Up to 1865 were responsible for the census of population every 10 years. Before the civil war (1,850 -1 861) had the function of catch and return runaway slaves to their owners. During the conflict confiscated the property used as a support for the cause of the Confederate States of America. Another mission was to prosecute spies. Among the names representative of the time are Seth Bullock, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Tom Smith, and so on. In 1870 was created the Department of Justice responsible for supervising the activities of the bailiffs.
