Homelessness in America

Introduction

Every individual has the right to live in a safe and secure place but in America, the rate of homelessness is increasing day by day. This issue needs to be addressed with proper attention by the social service providers. The increase in the rate of homeless people in USA has observed on the 1980's when the economy deteriorated, social service and housing cuts raised. There are many causes for the homelessness issue in the US. There are people who are living under shelter or those who are unsheltered but both these groups are considered as homeless as they are not living with their families at their home either they are living at rehabilitation centers and nonprofit organizations.

US government has announced various policies for the prevention of homelessness issue in people and also developed some federal programs for the helping homeless people in America. The Non-Profit Organizations which are providing social services to people are also working for the welfare of homeless people in USA.

There is no exact definition for the “homelessness”. People are identified as homeless on three basis:

Current Homelessness

People or families who do not have fixed residence place for night residence are called as current homeless people. These people are living without shelter at private or public places and some of them are living under shelter but temporarily and they are provided with a residence in which they can spend no more than 9o days.

Imminent Homelessness

People who have lost their primary residence place on temporary basis.

Home instability caused by Hardship

People or families are facing home instability because they do not have any permanent place or residence for living.

Literature Review

It has been surveyed by the National Coalition for the Homeless that there are two most important factors are responsible for the homelessness in America. First is the poverty and the second is the reason that people cannot afford houses on rent so they prefer to live on temporary residences with or without shelter (The National Coalition, 2007). In America, poverty is the main reason behind the problem of homelessness and people who are facing poverty are at the high risk of homelessness. In USA, people belong to different religions, ages, ethnicities; social classes and life circumstances are get affected by the homelessness. There are many factors behind the homelessness of people.
