ABSTRACT

Managing capital Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Projects is a critical and challenging task that requires the ability to cope with complications arising from their complexity, irreversibility, and dynamic uncertainty. This has led researchers and professionals in the various industries to conduct extensive studies, develop models, and compile bodies of knowledge that put forward comprehensive project management tools, techniques and procedures that are necessary to mitigate challenges in EPC projects execution and ensure its delivery on time and within budget while maintaining quality and safety.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Overview

Project management is a systematic approach rather than a tool. Project management is the field of organizing, managing and planning resources in order to allow the successful achievement of a particular set of objectives and deliverables in the structure of the project. A project is a provisional effort, having a defined start and end (mainly constrained by quality, cost and time), carried out to deliver particular objectives, mainly to bring about added value or beneficial change. In construction industry, the project management became popular nearly 60 years back, immediately after the second world war, when the European regions were completely demolished as a result of war. These regions were rebuilt very rapidly and on a very larger scale, therefore several individuals were gathered for this reason, particularly technicians, project consultants and supervisors. On the other hand, even though, they were reconstructing quickly, still there were lack of quality manpower for them. A project manager for the EPC projects was only supervisors that time. He was responsible for handling all the projects, whether the projects were related to building power stations, sewage systems railways, or power stations. Soon, project management consultancies and government found that these individuals were not qualified enough to handle the operations of project management tasks. Therefore, they also started hiring project consultants thinking that they would perform well with the project managers.
