Introduction

Relationship between the architecture and religious is often known as religious architectural practice, which includes the design as well as construction of particular places worship such as churches, stupas, mosques, temples etc. As a matter of fact, there are many of the cultures which have specified resources for the construction of architectural worship places. However, within this domain, the role of religious and sacred spaces is pivotal and is the most permanent as well as impressive monolithic buildings which have been created by human beings over the period of time. In contrast to that, the sacred architecture is more local in nature and is non-monolithic, personal, and non-public (Verkaait, 2013).

In this regard, this paper focuses on the relationship between the religion and architecture specifically in terms of the relationship between religious buildings and culture's spiritual conception of God. More particularly there will be discussion on three cultures, i.e., Sumer, Indus Valley and Mesopotamia.

Sumer

The religious architectural building within the Sumerian culture is primarily the temples and Ziggurats. Temples, however, were the urban settlements and proliferated from a single room to a multi-acre complexes within the 2500 years of Sumerian history. The temples of that period were divided into a rectangle tripartite and were a combined plan. As a matter of fact, the tripartite plans consisted of a large main hall with two small halls on each of the sides. The entry into the hall was based on a narrow axis, while it expanded towards a large axis which ended up at the central shire. However, the temple was considered as the home of the God of the City, yet it was used as a storage building as well as for accommodation of high priests.
