Executive Summary

The purpose of this executive summary is to present an insight into the critical evaluation and explanation of the architecture, behavior and operation of voice over IP communications systems. In addition, the executive summary will highlight the impact of different carrier technologies on the effectiveness of a VoIP system; while giving attention to the concept of Quality of Service (QoS) in respect of the operational requirements arising from the demands of users and the needs of service providers. In order to do so adequately, the executive summary will also highlight the network design skills necessary to create and deploy VoIP in an organization, and appreciate the impacts of such deployment; to establish a skeletal structure for the discussion to follow.

Installing VOIP Infrastructure on Existing Enterprise Network

The Company

The effectiveness and efficiency provided by the use of Voice over Internet Protocol has driven an increasing number of network managers to adopt Voice over Internet Protocol as a communication method of choice over the last few years. The fact that a majority of Voice over Internet Protocol's are Ethernet based and make use of standard IP protocol only serves to make them an all the more attractive option. The convenience of using, sustaining and managing Voice over Internet Protocol makes them ideal for both personal and commercial use (Dang & Jennings, 2002). However, the increase in attention towards Voice over Internet Protocol has led to the simultaneously increase in the importance of effective transmission of data packets; making the use of Voice over Internet Protocol vulnerable to problems such as lags caused by low latency and packet loss. This makes the presence of real-time practice transmission an imperative pre-requisite for the effective use of Voice over Internet Protocol. The use of real-time traffic can help to make a significant improvement in the use of void.

Resources Required

However, implementing a Voice over Internet Protocol system is no easy task since it requires the project in charge to establish specifics that can have a direct influence on the performance of the Voice over Internet Protocol system (Hardy, 2003). Deploying Voice over Internet Protocol over pre-existent networks can create complications that can prove to be time-consuming since the variables that merit consideration include the QoS requirements, the influence that is experienced by network services and applications as a result of the load of the QoS, amongst others. The problems easily span across the dimensions of hardware and software.

In order to counter this problem, applications developed by the open source community have led to the availability of commercial software that helps to effectively test the performance that media-based applications can provide. However, a discussion of the advantages and challenges of implementing Voice over Internet Protocol with the support of these applications cannot be complete without shedding light on the two approaches that are relevant in the development of Voice over Internet Protocol over networks that are already running ...
