Introduction

This assignment briefly discusses a compound, mixture, and an element. The ionic and covalent bonds are the two types of chemical bonds that carry different properties and forms ionic and covalent compounds. The brief analysis of these terms is well discussed.

Difference between a mixture and compound

A compound is a pure substance which can be further divided into simpler substances by treating it chemically. For instance, water is a compound. On the other hand, a mixture is a substance that is formed from physical combination of the substances (Stoker, 2012). Following are the differences between a mixture and a compound:

A compound is a pure substance.

A mixture is not a pure substance.

A compound is formed by a chemical combination of two or more elements.

A mixture is formed by a physical mix of two or more elements.

There are fixed properties of compound. For instance, a compound will melt and boil at the fixed temperature and it will not change its properties.

There are no fixed properties of a mixture. A mixture's properties depend on the quantity and type of components mixed.

A compound is composed of fixed ratio of the elements.

A mixture is composed of varying ratio of the elements.

The proprieties of a compound differ from the properties of the elements that were chemically combined together to form a compound as new substance is formed.

The properties of a mixture do not differ from the elements that were physically combined together to fo0rm a mixture as no new substance is formed.

Chemical methods are used for separating the elements of a compound.

Physical methods are used for separating the elements of a mixture.

A pure substance- element or compound

A pure substance can be recognized as an element or a compound by examining the properties of a pure substance. The pure substance can be chemically treated that if giving heat to the pure substance or using electrolysis, if a pure substance does not break down, it means the pure substance is an element because an element contains the atoms of only a particular element. For instance, a copper contains the atoms of copper only. Even if kilo of copper is in the hand, the kilos of copper will contain the atoms of copper only. On the other hand, if a pure substance breaks down into simpler compounds through a chemical treatment, it means the pure substance is a compound. For instance, if water is chemically treated, it will break down into hydrogen and oxygen gas because one molecule of water contains one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen (Cracolice, 2009).

In chemical bonding, two types of bonds are formed; ionic bond and covalent bond. An ionic bond is formed when the atoms bound together due to the attraction of the negatively charged ions.
