Introduction

The purpose of this assignment is to talk about people in organization. The aim here is to describe the importance and historical background of the “freedom crossing statue” which is located on the coast of the Niagara River in Lewiston, New York. Further, this assignment also describes two main activities that we performed outside our class. The purpose of these activities was to develop problem solving skills, to build up an understanding of the solutions, and find the pattern to calculate number of moves that are necessary to complete the puzzle with any number of people. Moreover, the assignment also aims to answer the question that how do we assure inclusion in an organizational task?

Freedom crossing statue

The freedom crossing statue is located on the coast of the Niagara River, in Lewiston, New York. This monument honors the courage of erratic slaves who sought a new life of freedom in Canada, and the help and protection that the local volunteers provided these slaves throughout their journey across the Niagara River. This monument also celebrates and highlights the historical significance of the Niagara River as a gateway during the mid 19th century to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Freedom crossing statue was the first project that received the support of the Niagara River Greenway Commission. Moreover, the project planning, conception, and fund raising were entirely done by volunteers of the Historical Association of Lewiston, Inc, who is the sponsor of this monument (historiclewiston.org).

The major purposes of the freedom crossing statue are to praise and pay honor to the enslaved who sought a new life of independence, and to the local volunteers who provide their help on their journey. The statue also aims to celebrate the historical importance of the Niagara River. Moreover, it is based on a book “Freedom Crossing”, written by Margret Goff during 1969. This book is included in the course of 4th and 5th graders over the United States, and most of the students of 4th and 5th grades learn about the Underground Railroad with the help of this book. Further, this book also includes detail descriptions of numerous notable landmarks.

In addition to this, this statue depicts the moment of history in which fugitive slaves saw Canada for the first time. Josiah Tryon is the Underground Railroad's station master, Lewiston's volunteers, handles the baby to the fugitive mother, and he gave them hope by secretly helping them to get free with the help of his rowboat. Thus, he became a champion of equality and justice. Moreover, Laura Eastman is pointing her outstretched hand towards Canada, and became an iconic heroine, reflecting as a symbol of human spirit's success over oppression (historiclewiston.org).
