Good Academic Practice

Good academic practices involve the ethics of writing among which the most important is to not to take credit of any work done by other authors or researchers. Such practice is called “plagiarism” in which words of any other author are represented as their own words (The Open University, 2008). In order to avoid plagiarism, it is important for researchers to present other's thoughts in their own words with their own understanding rather than cut and pasting.

Referencing

It is important to use referencing when a writer has to use work of other authors and researchers (The Open University, 2008). It is unethical to not to refer the efforts carried out by a researcher for his work. References not only give credit to the original work but also make the work credible. Referring other's work shows that the subjected has been well researched in the field.

Work done by other authors is referred in two different styles. First the in-text citation and other is references. The in-text citations are the indicators that are given in between the paragraphs whenever ideas, thoughts, finding, and results of other authors are presented within the text (The Open University, 2008). These citations are given in parenthesis ( ). References is the detailed list of the in-text citations which informs about the author, date of publication, topic and the publisher along with page numbers from where the information has been extracted.

Reflection

Good academic practices teach students and also teachers to acknowledge and respect work and efforts of other authors. In order to become an honest researcher, it is important to inform in your work, the ideas of other authors. Researchers and authors spend their time, money, and efforts to contribute into the world of academia through their findings. Not acknowledging their efforts is like stealing their words which is known as plagiarism. Such practices only produce duplicate or fake information which not only degrade the author but also hamper the originality of the text in-corporate in duplicate one.

Plagiarism can easily be avoided with the help of referencing. Referencing is used to inform readers that such and such ideas or the findings are taken from the work of that particular author. These thoughts are written in your own words but they are not the product of your own mind that is why the producer should be given credit for that. These references are given in different styles. In-text referencing is naming the author exactly where the ideas of that author is presented. However, the detailed description of the work of that author is given in reference list at the end of the work.
