Introduction

The legalization of drugs has been a debatable issue for a long time in the history of USA. The use of drugs has been considered as illegal by policymakers and a serious health issue. The criminal justice system of USA has been involved in a continuous combat against usage of illegal drugs. This fight has been witnessed from a long time with respect to political and social structure of USA society. This process engages educational and health care systems as well along with correction court system. This very process adapted by the USA structure is accused for treating drug users as prisoners and serious offenders and are imprisoned and treated extremely adversely as if these drug users are serious enemies of the country. The issue is addressed by many scholars and the most adaptable solution to the issue is considered as legalization of drugs i.e. removing the use of drugs from criminal code of conducts.

This argument is supported by various logical arguments like criminal justice system has been a failure in combating drug abusers in the society in their tactics and system. The war against illegal drug use has cost the society heavily as compare to benefiting it. The total cost in this regard is estimated as $16 billion used by federal government in 1998 to combat illegal drugs use. Out of which $10.5 billion was utilized for the purpose of implementation of measures in order to reduce the drugs supplied. It is also arguable that majority of illegal drugs are proved to be non injurious in comparison with legal drugs like that of alcohol and tobacco. Therefore, it can be argued that illegal drugs should be treated equally as of legal ones. The legalization of drugs can also be prove to be beneficial for government and state as well as it would directly affect the expenditure made by government against drugs war in terms of police measures, courts cases, corrective programs. In addition, the legalization of drugs can also result in increase in revenue to government in form of tax. This source of revenue could be utilized in enhancing the education programs and law implementation activities to combat crimes (CliffsNotes.com, n.d.). A better education system with respect to usage of illegal drugs is more of a good technique rather than combating drug users and suppliers as part of criminal system because people would continue using these illegal drugs despite of laws and legislations unless they have appropriate education in this regard.

Discussion

There are a vast number of people in society who are not in favor of legalization of drugs usage inclusive of selling drugs. The strongest oppressors of this view point are considered as the law enforcement officials and groups. The government is in extreme favor of strict laws and rules against use of illegal drugs and strongly considers it as a significant source of reduced usage of illegal drugs.
