Introduction

Medea is one of the most important characters in the play 'Euripides'. He is a protagonist and lives in Colchis, which is an Island situated in the Black Sea. Medea is a powerful sorceress and she has a lot of powers that can use to her advantage. However, Medea mainly uses these powers for the purpose of helping Jason secure the Golden Fleece. Although it is not clear at first why Medea decides to help Jason in his escape, the audience gradually learns that it is due to the strong feelings of love that she harbors within her heart for him. Medea falls in love with Jason during her efforts to help him escape. Eventually, Jason ends up fleeing with Medea.

Medea had also killed her brothers while she was managing her escape with Jason. The reason for killing the brothers is to slow the followers who were chasing her. She possesses the devilish powers due to which she has been able to take revenge from local king of lolcus. She turned the daughters against their father and they eventually killed the king. Jason then divorces Medea from where the whole story starts and it turns Medea into a ruthless avenger. Jason is a villain of the story. He abandons Medea in order to marry Glauce who was the daughter of King of Corinth. Jason was hopeful that he would be able to advance himself in this new relationship but he was unable to witness the fire of revenge which has already been burning in the heart of Medea. Medea became a real villain of the story. Medea planted several murders in order to make sure that Jason suffers. This is a trait that is not heroic but antiheroic.
