Abstract

Dementia is potentially undiagnosed in the acute care settings. The care for dementia individuals is extremely stressful. The acute hospitals were formerly criticised as how badly dementia is managed. The individuals aged 64 years and above are at a higher risk for poor outcomes when they get admitted to acute care settings hence resulting in mismanagement and co morbidity. The purpose of this study was to raise the knowledge of the nursing staff in acute care settings and provide appropriate implementation of pharmacological and behavioural management for adult individuals suffering from dementia. This study will take the systematic approach in which there will be a wide range of relevant literature which relates to the matter of subjects such as Google scholar, journals, books, Science direct, ProQuest, CINAHL, PubMed, and Embase. The collected data will be analysed and compared. This dissertation reviews policies and research evidence on interventions such as environmental modification, standardized care protocols, skilled expertise, and staff education, assist to meet the needs of individuals suffering from dementia in settings of acute care.

The nurses can help the older individuals with dementia by encouraging the staff education. The management of the patients can be improved by improving nurse capacity to engage with the individuals positively and rapidly, maximizing exercise, looking at design, engaging the support of carers, and by identifying the vulnerable patients. It is possible that the person with dementia, alongside the progressive loss of autonomy and of their higher mental faculties, exhibits monstrous behavioural disorders such as anxiety, agitation, and aggression. Individual's ability to express and understand information, solve problems and plan for things is impaired by dementia. Communication problems tend to get worse because of dementia related problems such are memory loss and other acute illness and hospital settings. Communication is often expressed in the form of disruptive behaviour for patients suffering with dementia. A number of themes were identified during the literature review, and specific recommendations made.
