This paper elaborates the challenges that are being faced by the maritime sector of the economy. The Cyber security attack on the system is damaging the operations of this sector and discouraging the world trading mechanism. It enlightens the existing state of the maritime sector and the solutions that must be followed for counter the piracy and cyber crime issues.

1.1 Overview of the topic

Seas and oceans are connecting various nations across the globe, and significant volume of trade is done by the sea routes in which materials like fishing, mineral oil extractions, food items, chemicals, clothe are being traded. Therefore, the level of significance of the maritime sector can be analyzed. By considering the fundamental facts and statistics it is well cleared that maritime sector is playing a crucial role. Seventy percent of the world is covered with water and around eighty percent of the world's population is living around the coastal lines.

The challenges of 21st century are more of technological aspects, Cyber crime is one of the crucial threat which cannot be neglected at all. Many of the economies of various countries are suffering today due to this disruptive issue. The confidentiality of the data is at stake. A cyber attack can be considered as intensive as the terrorist attack of 9/11 on US. The increasing number of cyber attacks either on private or public networks of computers are getting intensive day by day.

In the year of 1949, it was almost impossible to craft the emerging treats of 21st century, who were drafting the North Atlantic Treaty but in the previous times the situations were not that much complex as it is now in the present era. The stages from cold war ear to post cold war cyber crime issues were not intensified. When the treats of cyber crimes became alarming NATO presented its six strategic concepts. In the year 1949 the crimes were related to the military, those were related to political and civilian issues. North Atlantic Treaty organization emerged for spreading the security environment in the world. Its core role is to maintain the unity, level of security.
