What is a Strategy?

The teaching of mathematics is part of the fundamental teachings and one can see him three basic functions: Give all individuals the mathematical literacy a necessary to citizen: understanding the digital data, namely the process, interpret, present, control the basic geometric figures, to be able to measure, reproduce, encode. Often used as a buzz word in education to describe a wide variety of learning activities, “cooperative learning” is defined as a teaching arrangement that refers to small, heterogeneous groups of students working together to achieve a common goal. These groups are designed for students to work together to learn, discover, and have shared responsibility for the group's learning. Although these structures are beneficial for any subject area, cooperative learning in math can be a powerful way to provide a variety of learning opportunities for students (Schmidt, 2011). There are several different structures that teachers can employ when planning cooperative learning in math. There are some known strategies that can be used with all students to learn content (such as science, math, social studies, language arts and foreign languages). 

An easy way to start the cooperative learning is to start with pairs rather than entire teams. Two students learn to work effectively in activities such as:

Assign a math worksheet and have students work in pairs.

One of the students solve the first problem while the second acts as a coach.

Students then switch roles for the second problem.

At the end of the second problem, meet with another couple and check the answers.

When both partners have reached an agreement on the answers, ask them to shake hands and continue to work in pairs in the following two problems.
