Introduction

The purpose behind this paper is to conduct the media analysis of a political article. The article that I have chosen is titled 'Climate Change Makes An Appearance At Political Conventions — But Is It More Than A Cameo?”The article is written by Stephen Lacey on the 7th of September, 2012 and was published on the think progress the climate progress website. The main underlying concept behind this article is why president Obama has stopped pursuing the growing global warning and other global environmental issues in his presidential campaign, what is the existing status of this issue and what is the government doing to bring awareness regarding the problem to the general public. The audience for this article are the citizens of the United States; however it can also be beneficial for other readers as well, since the concern being discussed in a universal one

Discussion

According to Vidal (2012) Ice in the Arctic Ocean has shrunk an alarming 18% within this year and the percentage will keep increasing with time unless proper procedures are not taken. Vidal critiques the world's response to such a growing concern he says that most of our responses are not of alarm or panic and the world continues to focus on less important issues even though our greatest problem is global warming. Scientists continue to emphasis on the importance of taking necessary measures in order to help the world ease the circumstances of this growing concern. In the year 2008 Obama extensively campaigned on the issue and made many promises to take initiatives in order to find appropriate solutions for the existing problems and based on 2012's summer conditions Obama has failed to make any mention regarding the issue during his 2012 election campaign. However only two months before the elections Obama chose to discuss the issue in one of his campaigns Obama mentioned some of the main environmental issues and how measures need to be taken in order to reduce the production of carbon dioxide (Lacey, 2012).

There are a number of factors that have lead to the conclusion that the article under discussion is thematic instead of episodical. Some of the major factors that have lead to this conclusion are as follows; firstly episodic articles focus only on an individual and address only a certain person whereas a thematic article focuses on a particular issue. From this article it is apparent that global warming is a universal issue and needs to be addressed to every living person. Within this article the main point of discussion is the issue of global warming and cannot be associated to a single person. An episodical article focuses on a single event that needs to be discussed whereas a thematic article focuses on a growing trend over time.
