ABSTRACT

Poverty is considered as a complex phenomenon. Too often it seems to be tempting in an environment of numeric for imagining that one would be able to capture the poverty of state in single number, not a least in the situation of the developing economies. Almost half of the population in developing economies are living in the rural areas and most of them belong to the agro business activities. Though, most of the rural economies are stagnant. The most significant reason behind this insufficient structure of public in the rural areas of the countries are, health, education and efficient marketing services, storage facilities for agricultural products and good roads. The policies of the government are not benefitting the rural economies, even though the whole economic development is relying heavily over the production from agriculture in most of the developing countries. Because of such kind of obstacles, poverty is majorly gripping over the people in developing countries. Irrespective of the limitations, mentioned above, the people in developing economies are helping themselves by taking entrepreneurial initiatives that are financed, supported and run by a number of micro financing institutions. These institutions are working quite hard for helping out the poor entrepreneurs for gaining health care, information and educational facilities and getting free from hunger. Such institutions in the developing countries are helping for the reduction of poverty levels throughout the country. MFIs have been engaged in building and developing infrastructure such as shelters, research centers, hospitals and schools for raising the standard of living and keeping people safe from the disasters.

This dissertation will be analysing the main strategies that have been followed by developing MFIs for facilitation of self employment for the people living below the poverty line, particularly, by providing financial assistance by giving away loans at affordable rates to such people. This dissertation will look into the case of Ghana and Bangladesh, particularly, as both of them are developing economies. This will help in better understanding of the functions of Micro Financing and how has it been perceived, used and understood by the government and citizens. After the in-depth analysis of the awareness and situation of MFIs in Ghana and Bangladesh, recommendations were given for the commercialisation of Micro Financing and its limitations too.
