Mind as Computer- Response Paper

The mind as a computer

The study of Kim (1996) that discusses the philosophy of mind from various aspects includes a particular focus on the concept of mind as computer. The section in the book named Mind as computer: machine functionalism discusses the different patterns of mind in relation to the function of a computer machine. The previous researches on the topic have lead to the idea of multiple realizability among the minds of the people. The mental properties of human beings posses the multiple realizability skill which is compared to the computer machinery and its functions. The mind brain identity theory is also closely related to the concept of multiple realizability. However, the focus of the concept as mind as a computer discusses the type physicalism. The author has justified the argument f multiple realizability through the theory of mind- brain identity theory because it provides the basis for the understanding of new concepts related to the human minds (Kim, 1996). It has played a pivotal role in the modification of the current concepts regarding the psychology status and particularly the concepts related to cognitive sciences.

Kim (1996) has specifically focused on the multiple realizability and the functional conception of the mental processes of human beings. It has been identified from the study that the possibility of immaterial realizations of the mental function cannot be set aside as a matter of a priori conceptual fact. It has been focused that the principle provided by the author in the study of mind as a computer lead us to the probability of the occurrence of multiple realization process inside the minds of the human beings. If mental property is termed as “M” is realized in case of pain in the body of human being due to the activation of C- fiber inside the mind of the human beings. It is different among the other species such as reptiles and octopuses because of the difference in the psychological mechanism present in the other species and the human beings. This is the reason; the realization of pain is also different and has vast differences among the different species. This fact intrigues us to the different realizations and properties of the mental concepts. It does not include a constraint in the actual biological and physical mechanism and structures. As a result, it can be said that in a particular system, it cannot be realized or implemented. Kim (1996) has defined that the concept of engine can be specified through the job description of the engine. The author has differentiated the mechanism through the argument that the job description specifies the concept of engine but the mechanism itself cannot execute the job. The findings from the studies of behaviorist and type physicalist are also included in the study in order to support the argument regarding the multiple realizability.

According to the brain- state type physicalist, almost all pains posses some common properties which makes the pain cases as ...
