Misogyny: The World's Oldest Prejudice

Introduction

Misogyny is a trait that is manifested by a feeling of contempt, perhaps of hostility, against women. Misogyny is mostly for men, but at times some women also exhibit this trait. This is one of two forms of sexism. The word misogyny comes from the ancient Greek. It consists of two ancient Greek words “misos” which means hatred, and “gynecological” which means women (Holland, 2006). In the dictionary of philosophy, Christian Godin gives two meanings to the word misogyny:

Hatred of women is an aversion to their bodies in contempt for their behavior and personality;

Perspective of one who refuses to admit the equality of men and women.

Misogyny can go unnoticed to the conscience when worn by the language. For example, one can notice that the spoken word “man” has an ambiguous meaning, referring to both the individual male and humans. Thus, a group of students is composed of men, women, or a combination of both, while a group of students is composed exclusively of women (Whitehouse, 2009). The agreement of mixed groups of words (e.g. a student and a student) is using the unmarked gender. Confusion is sometimes shortened by this rule “the masculine wins over the feminine,” then it would be correct to say: only all-female groups are female, the others use the unmarked gender.

Background

Misogyny has been considered a cultural backwardness rooted in the concept of male superiority and limiting the role of women to home and play. It is shown that it is not only the attitudes of rejection and individual aggression against women, but especially those from institutions like the State and the Church. Along with the historical account, misogyny has been presented under many faces: as contempt, humiliation, exclusion, discrimination, rejection, dispossession, and so on. Today as yesterday, this hatred leads, with frightening regularity, violence in all its forms: beatings, torture, rape, mutilation (Holland, 2006). Many murders of women, from the crimes of Jack the Ripper to the dead women of Juarez, have a root misogynist.

Homosexuality and Misogyny

Warriors in the ancient civilizations, the homosexuality was sometimes accepted, but was valued then enter being penetrated was devalued. This was true for the homosexual as the heterosexual (in this case it's misogyny). Be penetrated is considered a position “therefore, less passive” and enter a position as “active so superior” and this vision continues today as can be seen in the words of deception. The use of these terms replace the words wrong / being cheated, then more dedicated to the concept of adultery, and enhance the character “humiliating” is seen as humiliating to be penetrated.

Oldest Prejudice

In ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Babylon, though warlike and violent, there are no clear signs of misogyny. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Mesopotamia and in the back of the Celtic culture nomads of northwestern Europe, there are myths of paradise lost, but they do not blame women for their loss. This finding led to Jack Holland (Ireland, 1947 - United States, 2004) ...
