Notes on research methodology

Quantitative research method can aid in risk analysis, identify risk, control risk, monitor risk, but this method is not suitable for understanding subjective meaning that executives have regarding risk and enterprise. Thus, the research will be qualitative and the researcher will collect data as semi structured in-depth interviews and surveys. This is because the data collected to extract the result will analyse it by thematic categorisation and using the NVIVO software.

The research philosophy (epistemology), which is divided in to three kinds; Positivism, where emphasise the important of objective so the researcher separate himself from the objective (scientific method) (Mangan, J., et al, pp. n.d., 2005); Realism, when belief that nature and social science can and should apply the same kind of approach to the collection of the data (Ntseane, D.M, pp. 196, 2012), and finally the Interpretivism, where is more concerned to access and understanding of the world and the researcher believe that he cannot separate himself from the objective, and more concerned to access and understanding the individuals perception of the world, because they see the social phenomenon as product of shared understanding and meaning are not always predictable or even formally rational (Blaxill, M.F., pp. n.d. 2008). But there are limitations of this approach:

Dealing with complexity

Leaving an answered question of why fact are as they are

Problem of categorisation

I have chosen interpretivism, because risk is subjective and socially constructed, and its

cannot use positivism because of assumes that risk is objective or factual. In spite of it, Interpretivism allows the researcher to associate itself with the subject matter of the research, and since the research is about a socially constructed phenomenon, and researcher himself is also the part of the society, therefore, interpretivism is principally the most appropriate kind of epistemology in this category of research.

The development of interpretivism in qualitative examination is depicted by Marsh. Bog saw interpretivism as making progress at that focus against a dominatingly positivist look into convention in qualitative form (Mack, et al., pp. 61, 2005). Kenneth and Isaac recognize that theory assumes an urgent part in interpretive research in qualitative form (Livesey, pp. 5, 2006). Theory is utilized as a 'sensitising device' to view the planet in a certain manner. Specific perceptions could be identified with unique classes and to thoughts and ideas that have an association with different scenarios, intimating some generalizability (Livesey, pp. 2, 2006). The sorts of theory that qualitative specialists are prone to reference are social hypotheses for example structuration theory or on-screen character system theory.

Considering the above given argument, the deductive approach does not seem to go with interpretivism research. Because, the deductive approach is rather too logical that leads to a conclusion. Whereas, in this research, interviews and surveys are used as instruments to collect data, which are eventually not efficient enough to gather a 'true' factual and logical data. The data is interpreted by looking at the trend of information ...
