Title

Obsolete systems challenges in information systems of oil and gas industry: impact to IT industry and uses in industrial plants in oil and gas sector?

Introduction

Information systems, in the present world play a significant role in the collection, filtration and distribution of data and information across the domain of any particular sector. Oil and gas resources, for any country are very important as they play a critical role in the economy of that country (Sams et.al, 2006, p.n.d.). Therefore, the boom of information system technology has also impressed this sector. Oil and gas sector also makes use of information technology system to increase the exploration of the oil and gas and somehow decrease the costs of production. The processes that are carried out in the production and the distribution of oil and gas are very complex and driven by high capital costs (Schulz, n.d., p.n.d.). The world economy significantly depends on the oil and gas production as many of the countries are rich in oil and gas reservoirs. The sector of oil and gas are greatly affected by the use of information and communication technologies (Wood, 2007, p.5).

There are three main phases in the oil and gas production; exploration, production, transportation. Modern systems of oil and gas sector make use of many new technological inventions and information systems that helps in better collaboration and carrying out of tasks (Tornsjo & Rypdal, 1999, p.6).

Research Question

The following is the main research question on which the study will focus:

What are the challenges of the obsolete information systems used in oil and gas industry?

The sub focus of the study will be the following questions:

The impact of these information systems on the information technology industry?

The uses of these information systems in industrial plants in oil and gas sector?

The study will also try to focus on the challenges of the present information system and information communication technologies being used in oil and gas sector in order to compare the former and the latest information systems.

Significance of the study

The financial and economic studies have thus far proven that the oil and gas will continue to grow and contribute significantly in the global economy. The use of information systems, in the present world is getting highly popular in oil and gas sector. When it comes to switching the current system of any sector to technological solutions then no sector gets exempted from challenges and issues (Zareski, 1979, p.n.d.). It is, therefore important that researches are carried out to gather information about these challenges and issues to make future innovations and improvements.
