The importance of control in an organisation

Virtually all organizations, researchers believe, control the behaviour of members of the organization - one of the most important management functions. Monitoring can be defined as activities aimed at detecting and eliminating deviations from accepted standards and goals (technological, behavioural, etc.) of the organisation. In practice, control is carried out in two stages: 1) assessment of existing facility and its comparison with the standard (such as, regulatory or planning measure), 2) the imposition of sanctions aimed at bringing the controlled object in a state that is close or identical to the normative or planned.

The current research in the field of management control in organizations is based on a systems approach. American researcher R. Edwards developed a typology of management control, according to which the following are types of controls:


It is implemented on a personal level, where the main role is played by interpersonal relationships.


The system implemented at the level of role relations, which are the basis of institutionalized formal ties based on internalized norms specific to the organization and of the corporate culture. Technical

It is implemented during the execution of certain activities in accordance with certain management, information technology and social engineering.


It is based on impersonal formal relations, that is, on rules, regulations and orders determined the existing hierarchy of the organization. During the operation of each organisation, there is a system of management of cultural welcome and social control, which combines all the basic four types. In order to exercise effective control in the organization used a number of ways in which leaders can successfully guide the efforts of staff and to regulate the distribution and movement of resources. It is obvious that management control is particularly true for the behaviour of employees in the organization, and therefore we will be treated as social control. According to the theory developed by the famous American sociologist M. Eaton, as well as Russian scientist AI Kravchenko, there are three basic ways to control the behaviour of the organisation, which are used as the leaders of the unconscious, and quite deliberately, depending on the situation. Let us consider in more detail how these impact on controlling the various subsystems of the organisation.

Control through the socialisation of individuals to group norms

Controlling the impact will be most successful if standards of behaviour are completely internalized members of social groups and become part of the personality structure of the organization. Implementation and operation of control through socialization can establish a lasting social order and orientation with respect to goals, task organization, resource mobilization and to achieve the effect synergic manifestations, from which the entire organisation benefits.
