PERFORMANCE & INTEGRATION MANAGEMENT

Performance and Integration Management in the Built Environment 2013 (Assignment2)

[Name of the Institute]

Executive Summary

The University of Salford has planned to use the technology of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in order to build its campuses. BIM has an effect on the entire functioning of the organization. BIM implementation has organizational, product and process aspects associated with it. Deployment of BIM should be aligned with the objectives, vision and mission of the organization. A crucial aspect of BIM is that it enables information sharing between different operating units in an extremely efficient manner. It makes the right information available to the right decision maker at the right time. Subsequently, this increases the efficiency of many processes of the project along with preventing delays from occurring in various tasks. There are several software tools of BIM. In current practice, several challenges relating to design and construction occur. The engineers and architects have to spend enormous amount of time to overcome those challenges. The BIM-based software tools enable the architects and engineers to solve these issues in a matter of minutes. BIM brings about several changes in the processes of an organization. These changes include technology change, process change, policy change and cultural change. The organization is required to give crucial importance to the change management process. The organization should evaluate its current processes and the changes that are required for facilitating the implementation of BIM in the university.

Performance and Integration Management in the Built Environment 2013 (Assignment2)

Introduction

The University of Salford has planned to develop its campus, infrastructure, and services in order to enable it to support ambitious, creative and confident learning organisation of world class quality. The University of Salford holds a leading position in academia and research in the built environment in the United Kingdom as well as internationally. It is considering adopting Building Information Modelling (BIM) and related technologies to facilitate the design and construction of the next two buildings in its Campus Plan. The University has mandated the use of BIM for the building project in order to deliver benefits during the construction as well as design phase. BIM will also help in managing the operational life of the building after it is completed. A clash-resolved and completely coordinated BIM model of the University building will be a crucial production of this entire project. It will be used for managing the reactive and forward-planned maintenance of the building.

As implementation of BIM would introduce several changes in many aspects of the university, its long established procedures and processes would be required to change. Naturally, the employees will show resistance to cultural and organizational change brought about by the implementation of BIM. However, BIM has several benefits associated with it. It will help in improving collaboration and information sharing ...
