Performance Management in Creating a Diverse Culture

Abstract

This paper examines how performance management can foster and create a diverse culture. Since, diverse workforce emerged as an essential need of organizations to remain competitive. This study is based on secondary qualitative research and found that effective performance management refers to the unified system of hiring of diverse workforce based on talent, training them, compensate them effectively based on work performance, and strive to keep the diverse workforce motivated. As a result, managers can effectively create a diverse culture within the organization.

Introduction

Diversified corporate culture is a process in such a culture, which is based on the diversification of values-based, taking into account the different employees, organizations, groups and other needs and includes a variety of established and up in a culture dominated an element of culture new, complex enterprise culture. This corporate culture focused on cultural diversity, fully inclusive non-main cultural groups, there is no bias in the management system and to conflicts between different groups is minimized. Since, US is a country of a diverse cultural mix; thus, organizations an effective performance management that can meet needs of diverse workforce, and thereby, create a diverse culture within the organization (Van Knippenberg, Dawson, West & Homan, 2011). The aim of this paper is to examine how performance management can create a diverse culture.

Cultural Diversity in USA

USA is one of the most diverse countries in the world, from its geography to the demographic composition, it is impossible to speak of a unique feature in this scenario of geographic, racial, ethnic and cultural wealth. In a multicultural society like the U.S., the diversity of the workforce within the company, both race and gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual identity begins to be perceived as a value added by employers.

With the continuous expansion of business scale, increase employee diversity, coupled with the popular people-oriented thinking, a single corporate culture has been unable to meet this trend, therefore, diversified cultural management as a new management style, has become a contemporary business critical issues looming (Moynihan & Pandey, 2010).

Role of Performance Management in Diverse Culture Creation

Studies have reported the significance of performance management to incorporate diversity within the organization. The concept of talent management has emerged in recent times, which asserted that organizations must recruit employees from a different region, age, gender and ethnicity if they want to be the best, and for long-term sustainability (Gruman & Saks, 2011; Prieto, Phipps & Osiri, 2011). Talke, Salomo & Rost (2010) stated that the performance management can be defined as a system which takes care of broader needs of employees by using tools of motivation, performance appraisal and effective remuneration.

Performance management as needed in the home country, the host country or other countries employs staff from different cultural backgrounds.
