Every morning I am amazed when I rush through the Coeur De Catherine to catch my shuttle for my 8 am Monday class. It is unbelievable to me that I have managed to return to the School of my dreams and in so many ways I know this is my second and only chance to prove this to myself. In 2004, I found myself receiving an acceptance letter to the College of St Catherine. This was a short lived success because I found myself faced with too many challenges including losing my assistance for tuition, major depression, losing three siblings to HIV/AIDS, I soon fell into a path of hopelessness and eventually I was unable to accomplish my academic goals.

I have experienced great cultural diversity after coming to the United States as an international student, and experienced a lot of hardships including poverty and homelessness. To add to my challenges, I also made a tough choice to leave an abusive marriage. Through these experiences, I have become more aware through my hardships, and experiences of a number of social issues that call for Social workers. My decision to pursue a Social Work degree came as a result of how others have served me over the years and I would like to give that gift back to the community.

As a prospective member of the Phi-Alpha Beta Epsilon Chapter Social work society, I understand the importance of superior academic achievement, scholarship and most importantly service to the community. Though I have had more hardships that I ever anticipated, I have grown to become a more community serving individual who always seeks ways to help others around me.
