Discussion

Almost all people would have noticed that whenever anything is heated up, its temperature rises. Also, most of the people think heat and temperature as similar things. However, the case is quite different. Heat and temperature are somewhat related to each other, but mainly are two different concepts (www.bbc.co.uk).

Initial definitions

Temperature can be defined as “the degree of coldness or hotness of an environment or a body.” It is a measure of the average kinetic energy of numerous particles in matter's sample, which is expressed in terms of degrees or units designated on a standard scale.

On the other hand, heat is a form of energy that is associated with the movement or motion of molecules or atoms. This type of energy is capable of being transmitted through fluid and solid media by conduction, through empty space by radiation, and through fluid media by convention. Moreover, heat is the transfer of energy that takes place as a result of temperature differences or changes in a phase, and the resulting energy is transferred from one body to the other (www.bbc.co.uk).

Relationship between heat and temperature

There is a direct relationship between heat and temperature. As the temperature is measured in degrees or units, so its value is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance. The temperature is not energy itself; rather it is a number which is directly proportional to a form of energy that is heat. The temperature is something that measures heat. It is heat that has the ability to increase or decrease the temperature. For instance, if we add more heat to a substance, its temperature will automatically become higher, and if we remove heat from a substance, its temperature will become lower with it. High levels of temperature mean that the molecules are having motion; they are moving, vibrating and rotating with the consumption of more energy.
