Summary

The healthcare system in the modern era is faced with the challenges posed by the increase in the demand for healthcare services despite a celebrated increase in the quality of services. At the same time, the hospitals are faced with the challenges of meeting the demands with a less than required number of nurses. This has resulted in increasing the workload on the nurses who are required to work tireless long hours after completing their daily scheduled shift. Factors like these in addition to the acuity of the patients and increasing challenges of working in the hospitals has had a negative impact on the health and performance on the nurses. Moreover, due to these factors, hospitals across the United States are faced with problems of recruiting and retaining their staff to the desired level. This calls for more coming up with new and innovative solutions like eHealth that allows nurses to work from remote places and keep check ont their patients.

The potential harm that can be done to the health and recovery of a patient due to negligence from nurses can be life threatening because they are responsible for the patient's right from the very beginning till the time they leave. If the nursing staff suffers from fatigue, it is likely to have a negative impact on the performance of the nurses in the healthcare system. A study of more than 10,000 professionals showed that extended work hours on daily basis resulted in increasing the chances of injury by 37%, while when calculated on per week basis it declined to 23%. The most striking conclusion was the finding that overtime resulted in increasing the chances of getting hurt by 61% (Dembe er.al. 2005, p588).
