Brief History Of Organized Crime

By the mid of eighties , organized crime was said to be considered as crucial issue and it was mainly concerning a confined number of countries specifically the US and Italy and at times it was also linked to Colombia, China and Japan.. Currently all national law enforcement agencies of Europe have claimed the fact that every nation is now facing a problem of organized crime and now it has become mandatory to fight against it and it is said to be a priority of not only Europol but also of enforcement agencies to fight against the threat that have been posed by such crimes in the public and the media when it comes to their opinion at a worldwide level (Paoli, 2008).

Facts, Statistics & Public Opinion

It is difficult to make an estimation of the extent to which drug trading has been taking place. There have been attempts made but then considering such activities go unreported it is difficult to have an accurate estimation. A publication that has been issued by United Nations in 1998 known as Economic and Social Consequences of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking stated that there have been black market transactions made of synthetic drugs totaling to $60 billion, Cannabis totaling up to $75 billion, Cocaine ranging from $110-130 billion and heroin ranging from $100-110 billion. The total value of global figure for black market is $360 billion and has a turnover of $400 billion annually (www.worldometers.info). Public opinion has it that drug usage has become a part and parcel of our society and more people are using it on regular basis and are becoming addicted to it. It is not the fault of the drug users but the fault of the sytem where such harm inducing substances are openly available and used (www.guardian.co.uk)

Premise Behind Choosing The Topic

The unethical and illegal drug trading has said to become a black market operating at worldwide level and is directed towards manufacturing it, cultivating, distributing and selling the finished products to countries that have been banned under the drug oriented prohibition laws and US is no exception. Many types of drugs are banned with an exception of few which are allowed to be dealt with. It is a widespread act considering the fact that it is highly lucrative in USA. Drug trafficking represents 40 percent of the total organized crime and is said to generate an annual income of nearly $110 billion. This business is said to be lead by gigantic trafficking organizations and have said to dominate the illegal drug market. Groups that are involved in such heinous act work in collaboration with other groups to ensure that it takes place in an effective and efficient manner without any hindrance (Nadelmann, 1989). It is this aspect which can be termed as core or support configuration and a part of every organized crime that is present and is currently practicing today.
