Article Review of “A different kind of war? September 11 and the United States' Afghan War”

This article is written by Colin McInnes on the disastrous incident of 11 September 2001 that was faced by United States. According to the author, these terrorist attacks were of different kind of war that the United States has faced. Mary Kaldor has declared this incident as “new wars” and Martin Van Creveld has named it as “the transformation of war”. Colin McInnes has tried his level best to find out the connection between the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and its abrupt consequences.

He has analyzed this incident from the four-part framework such as; the deaths of the civilians should be controlled, the wars during the period of 1990's the wars were kept localized, the professional were involved in wars to safeguard the west and manage the risks, and an individual leader or regime is the actual enemy not a state (McInnes, 2003, pp.165-184). The US campaign in Afghanistan is also analyzed in this article that was the operation mainly done for continuing freedom in the state or it was simply a different kind of war. Colin McInnes has tried to identify the reasons behind the two events; US campaign in Afghanistan and 11 September 2001. It was declared by the author that these two events were two different kinds of new wars.

The west has always played an important role in addressing the issues related to terrorism of various countries such as Kosovo, Haiti, Somalia, and Gulf etc. Due to the involvement of west in these activities, it is facing the terrorist attacks like the 11 September attacks. The intervention of America in Haiti and Somalia, intervention of NATO in Kosovo and the alliance operations in the Gulf countries were some of the steps that were taken by the west but these interventions did not lead to the consequences that would result in war. The superpower rivalry is one of the clear reasons that the countries of the west have to take necessary measures in stopping the terrorist activities that is evolved in the entire world.
