Practitioner's views of Free Flow Play

Introduction

Play is central to the health and the growth of individual and community. Through play human beings both celebrate and shape their world. It is a dynamic which permeates culture; more a process, a relationship and an attitude than a thing in itself. Play is a free activity, intrinsically self-motivated and non-utilitarian, where attention is voluntarily limited. For the player, absorption may lead to an altered sense of time and/or space, a fusion of action and awareness, and an enhanced feeling of competence, energy and discovery. The activity is often felt to be different, set apart, from everyday life, and in Protestant cultures this division has been rigidified in the opposition of work and play (Santer et.al, 2007, pp.45-72). The uselessness of play is an irritant to a moralistic work ethic, and this rigidity has nurtured a considerable anti-theatrical prejudice.

In the rhythm of the day, at any modern daycare facility, sufficient time is given to the organization of the free play of children. Free play for children is as essential activities, like any job - for an adult. The essence of the game lies in the freedom. This means that the child himself, without an adult brings to his game "all" that he sees in the world. The child lives in a world of fantasy, creativity, dreams, and it is extremely important act of his life, the game - a preparation for independent life (Savage, 2004, pp. 65-89). The aim of the daycare instructors and teachers is to see the game as, not interfering and not pulling the child out of this world.

The role of the daycare in bringing the best out of the child is very important. Many researchers are of the view that in a day care setting teachers or instructors should be able to put themselves in that part of the game, right at that step, ...
