Introduction

The increased globalization has lead to the concept of diversity within the organizations, workplaces and almost every institution. The successful organizations are those who consider the fact of diversify among the employees. Thus, keeping in view the varying backgrounds of the employees at work and substantially strategize their human resource management so that they could maintain a favorable environment and culture within the organization that promotes objectivity, success and attainment of goals within the organization or institution. The core purpose of diversity management is to progress and develop the acknowledgement, promotional and implementation of diversity within the institutions and organizations. Diversity is beneficial for the organization if used properly and effectively because it results in opening up the different ways and approaches of thinking, perceiving and acting of personnel within the organization and thus it leads to the enrichment of the academic community and organizational learning behavior. Every organization around the world has concerns regarding the management of people in their workforce. This issue is widespread in the field of business management. The effective management of human beings in an organization is one of the crucial factors that determine the success of the organization. It also helps the organization in achieving a distinguishing position in the competitive industry (Albrecht, 2000). This concept becomes a challenge for those who manage the workforce in an organization. It requires skills, knowledge and abilities to effectively manage the human resource factor in an organization that could lead the organization to success (Gooderham et al., 2012).

This paper discusses the principles of good diversity management by outlining the theories pertaining to the diversity management that helps in critical evaluation of the principles that are effective in maintaining diversity. It analyzes the theories of diversty that relates to the principles of good diversity management. The theories discussed include Social Identity Theory, Self Perception Theory, Stereotype, Schemas and Self Categorization Theory.

Diversity Management

It has been observed that human beings tend to differ in characteristics such as age, national or social background, religious background, ethnicity, Gender, mental and physical ability, sexual orientation and worldviews or opinions. The collection of people from different backgrounds and having different characteristics lead to the formation of diversity within an institute or organization. Diversity is a source of innovation and creativity that could result in the progression and development of future prospects of the organization and the achievement of competitive advantage in the industry or world market. Diversity is important within an institute or workplace because it provides opportunities to broaden the horizon and exploit the different prevailing opportunities to the organization or institution. Organizations are managing the diversity due to the increased globalization but it is not considered as a core function of the human resource management department of an organization. There is lack of literature available on the managing of diversity through the use of human resource management in organizations (Gronhaug & Nordhaug, 1992).
