PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Wireless Technology Infrastructure

Executive Summary

The implementation of wireless technology infrastructure does not involve one particular approach. The company must identify its own needs and then identify a solution, ideally suited to its own conditions. Components of wireless infrastructure include management server, wireless controller, wireless access points, switch and a network router. Wireless LANs use electromagnetic waves for data transmission. Users are connected to access points wirelessly. 802.11n is a modern Wi-Fi specification, which is downward compatible and data transfer can occur at speeds of up to 300 Mbps.

The implementation involves requirements identification, site survey and product selection. Potential risks in the implementation are electromagnetic interference, unauthorized access, eavesdropping on communications. Risk mitigation includes changing default settings, implementing security methods. Devices and their quantities to be purchased will be finalized after requirements specification and site survey. Implementation will take four months for completion. Several assumptions have been made. These relate to specifications, devices, external hiring, budget, security and available resources. Proper justifications are made for these assumptions.

Wireless technology infrastructure will improve employees' productivity, availability of network 'on the go', operational processes and overall image of the company. It will be a competitive advantage for the organization and make it in line with the current and advanced technology infrastructures.

Introduction

Wireless technology benefits an organization in two ways; first in the area of core business and second in the area of operations. Core business benefits include business process improvement, improved employee productivity and increased capacity of the organization to start new ventures. On the operations side, it reduces management cost and capital expenditure (Gupta, 2011, pp. 1-4).

Technological infrastructure includes a set of physical devices and software applications needed for the entire function of the enterprise. It has eight main components; hardware, operating system, software applications, data storage, networking, telecommunication, internet and help desk systems.

An organization requires high-speed internet access, wireless devices, DSL modems, and wireless routers to create a wireless technology infrastructure. An effective organizational wireless solution means selection of appropriate wireless standards and technologies. Wireless technology is leading the technology landscape. Wi-Fi networks are shifting towards convergence of wireless technologies. From local enterprise applications, we have moved to applications in the internet cloud.

There is not one wireless technology solution that could solve all problems of the organization. Companies must identify their particular needs and identify a solution that best matches their requirements. It should be ensured that the wireless architecture selected is the optimum solution under the given constraints and resources.

Implementation of Wireless Technology Infrastructure

Components of Wireless Infrastructure

The Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure is already in place in the organization. The objective is to facilitate mobility and, in particular, the information access, exchange and sharing among the users.

Wireless LANs use electromagnetic waves for data transmission. It uses Radio Frequency (RF) technology, for transmitting and receiving data, over the ...
