Introduction

Slavery is one of the most significant factors in the history of the United States of America, which has had a crucial impact on the national socio cultural environment. The slavery environment in the South of the country was completely different form the Northern regions, as the Northerners were relatively more just and equitable. The Southern states however had a crucial stake in the agriculture based economy; hence they were dependant on the free labor presented by slavery. Even though the African Americans living in the Northern regions had a drastically better lifestyle and access to more civil liberties; they also had to face several forms of racism on a continuous basis. Slavery wasn't just a social phenomenon which as rampant in isolated parts of the country; it was a socio cultural norm in the entire country. The white population were accustomed to the isolated status of the African American population, and that's why the proceeded to treat them differently. IN the northern American states the African Americans had drastically more civil liberties and freedoms; however they still lived in a society skewed towards the white population.

Even the Caucasian Americans, who wanted to treat the African Americans in an equal manner, had to alter their behaviors due to the fears of a social backlash. If a white American were to treat the African Americans on an equal basis, he might have a risk of being ostracized by the mainstream society or his own family (Sernett, 1999). The story regarding the protest against the Negro Pew highlights the social environment of the country for the Northern African American population. The African Americans had to get accustomed to the biased and discriminatory social norms to function within the mainstream society.
