Introduction

This essay mainly focuses on the theoretical aspects related to preparation for practice as a social worker. It also discusses the pragmatic case of a service user to build comprehensive concept on realities social work. It further intensive fostering (IF), explores the reasons for and against referring Perry; a service user to the Staffordshire Intensive Unit. It also summarises the background of a service user, examines his experiences in a secure unit, and discusses my personal development, arising from the support planning classroom activity.

MTFC Model and an Act associated with Social work

The Youth Justice Board (YJB) specially made bureaus in three divisions of the United Kingdom, in 2005, to guide the evidence-based intervention; “Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC)”, which was established by the “Oregon Social Learning Centre (OSLC)” in the US. This, in the framework of the English YJB, was to be recognized as “Intensive Fostering (IF).” This intervention intended for persistent and serious young offenders, who perceived custody or an intensive supervision and surveillance programms (ISSP) as an internative to fostering. Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care is an intervention, based in the community, in which a multi-disciplinary group performs extensively with adolescents and their families throughout a residency with especially skilled foster carers, strengthening constructive behaviours and redirecting young people from offending peers. A directional change occurred to the conditions of sentencing young people to IF, through the affirmation of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. In light of this act, the courts may necessitate the young offender to have IF for at least six months as a situation of youth offender's psychoanalysis (Biehal, et.al, 2010, p. 3).

Intensive Fostering

IF take cares of vulnerable adolescents with a foster family for a year as part of a support programme. Young offenders may see social workers, family therapists, and liaison officers during the time spent in this programme of support. It includes some growth strategies for conduct of young people throughout the programme, such as they are awarded points for showing good behaviour in return for privileges. These points allow them to sped some time performing their hobby, like watching television. IF plays a great role as a substitute to guardianship. Few significant examples of IF operation are young offender's institutions, secure training centres, vigilant custody, and supervision programmes, in which youthful offenders are supervised at their homes (Puffett, 2009).

Perry's Background and his Experiences in a Secure Unit

The service user, Perry is a 13-year-old boy originally from South East London. He was recently given a custodial sentence for drug dealing, under sections 4 and 5 of the “Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.” Perry is one of five children, and he has two older brothers who are in jail for similar offences. He has affirmed this is “a family business.” Perry has, therefore, learned from what he has witnessed throughout his life and has copied the example of his brothers.
