Qualitative Problem Statement

Social stigma has been an underlining hindrance to the dropout rates and ineffective participation of African American community in family therapy (Thompson, Bazile, & Akbar, 2004). Although the African American community is experiencing the same rate of mental diagnosis like any other race, about 60% are void of care and are overrepresented in inpatient treatment facilities and underrepresented in outpatient services (Mayo, 2004). This qualitative case study will examine the tangible and intangible barriers to therapy for African Americans which is said to center on the social stigma and cultural taboo (Constantine, 2007). Data collected from this study proved that most African American communities are unable to keep up with family therapy due to stigma resulting from mistrust, confidentiality, family distress, communication, affordability, accessibility, and availability. Terrell (1994) suggested that Africa Americans who possessed negative attitudes about people with mental ill-nesses and stigmatized these individuals were fearful of mental health labels, and rejected therapy as being potentially helpful. Finally, it is imperative to note that the results collected from this study will provide relevant implications for family therapists and other clinicians working with African Americans (Bean et al., 2002).
