Oral Health

The topic that I have selected for the SLP is “Oral Health or Oral Hygiene”. A practice that keeps an individual's teeth and mouth clean and safe from all dental issues such as, gingivitis, bad breath and dental cavities is commonly known as Oral Health. Oral health is highly essential in some oral pathologic conditions, as it helps in quick regeneration and healing of the oral tissues. Some of the most commonly observed oral conditions are periodontitis, dental trauma (oral cysts, subluxation) and gingivitis.

Article 1: Oral Health-Related Quality of Life and Somatization in the Elderly

This peer reviewed article is done by Rolko C, Leisen J, Hassel AJ, Schmitter M, Rexroth W, and Leckel M. The research conducted in this article was based on Somatization disorders in the elderly people. The researchers have used past studies that revealed psychological issues due to poor oral health conditions (Hassel et.al, 2007). The objective of this research was to inspect the correlation among Somatization and OHRQoL (Oral Health-Related Quality of Life). 125 participants were selected for the study, who were 60 years and above in age. The mean age of these participants was 76.6 years and the sample was collected from primary geriatric medical hospital, who took part in cross sectional study. OHIP (Oral Health Impact Profile) was used in assessing OHRQoL and SCL-90-R (Symptom Check List) was used in assessing Somatization subscale (Hassel et.al, 2007). A detailed clinical dental examination was conducted for attaining the required results. Positive correlation (r > 0.4) was found among Somatization and OHRQoL.
