Racial Profiling

Introduction

Racial profiling refers to the practice of discrimination by the law enforcement officials against the people of the minority groups, race, ethnicity and other minority communities. The people of these groups are targeted on the basis of the doubt for the crime and illegal activities. The police and the law enforcement agencies practice the racial profiling on the basis of the past records of the specific communities or groups. This means that if the people from a particular group are involved in the criminal activities than after the crime has been committed, police target the people of that communities and groups and arrest them which leads to the discriminatory act of police.

Policy Formulation for Racial Profiling

The spread of the racial profiling by the police and the law enforcement agencies has resulted in the fear amongst the minorities and the immigrant groups. This is because they are afraid of getting arrested and being treated as criminal seven if they are not involved in the criminal activities (Department of Justice, 2003).

There are several policies that can be selected and implemented in order to address the issue of the racial profiling. These policies include the induction and recruitment of the different races and minority groups in the police department and in the law enforcement agencies in order to reduce the racial profiling (TSP, 2004). Other than this the police officers should be taught to not to get involve in the tactics and practices that are disturbing for both the police job and the public. Police officers should be trained in the culture and race specific manner. This will enable them to prevent the discrimination towards the races (Dominitz, 2003).

Apart from the above mentioned policies some other policies that are an option for the reduction of the racial profiling are, the police should work with the heads of the communities and the minority groups to listen and understand the problems they are facing. The racial profiling also occurs as a reaction towards the past record of the specific minority group or community. This means that identifying the reasons or problems that why those groups are involved in the criminal activities will also help declining the racial profiling (Weitzer, 2002).

People of the racial groups have started hating the police and the law enforcement agencies and they have stopped trusting the police and the justice giving bodies. To deal with this and to regain the trust the proper investigation and proofs need to be communicated to the heads of those communities from which the arrested person belongs to. Moreover, the police officers and the heads of the police have ignored the basic law, and they are indirectly supporting their respective communities and are targeting the minority groups. To tackle this issue, the policy can be to train them and keep a proper check on them and their activities on the job. To make this stricter, the firing policy should be considered which will work more quickly (Department of Justice, ...
