Recidivism

Introduction

The recidivism refers to the criminal act for which the crime offender was already given the punishment in past and the offender commits that crime again after having been lawfully sentenced for committing the crime in the past. The criminal repeats the undesirable behavior after having the negative consequences of that behavior. The term recidivism is also greatly used in referring to the proportion of previous punished prisoners who are rearrested. When the criminals are arrested and they are given the imprison punishment for years and after that they are released, there is always the risk that the crime may be convicted again by the same criminal (Stefanie A. C., 2008). Therefore, the serious crimes acts are carefully considered by also analyzing the psychological behaviors of the criminals so as to analyze the future possibility of the occurrence of the crime. The repetition of the crime is unrelated whether the earlier conviction was for negligent or intentional criminal act. The only exemption to this is the particularly unsafe recidivism, which is probable only for mostly serious deliberate crimes.

The following section aims at discussing in detail that makes the prisoner to return back to jail again after serving time in jail for the earlier committed crime. It will also be discussed in detail about the possible social factor that leads the criminal to conduct the crime repeatedly. Analyzing these factors will assist in understanding that what impact is created upon the minds and upon the psychological behaviors of the criminals and how the people in the societies play their role in making the offender to commit the crime again. It will also be discussed in the later section that why the topic of recidivism is important to the Cook Country Department of Correction and how it may or may not impact the department.
