Introduction

The profession of mental health counseling is a diverse profession which is guided by the standards that are nationalized regarding education, clinical practice and training. The professionals working in this diverse field are called mental health counselors. They are highly trained professionals who are responsible for the provision of such therapies which are consumer oriented. Their responsibility also requires the combination of traditional psychotherapy techniques with the practical techniques. They have to acquire approaches that are problem solving and that leads to the path of resolution of problem with an efficient and dynamic change (Alleman, 2002).

The mental health counselors are reimbursed by most of the national health managed care companies, for the provision of services by them. The mental health counselors are certified and licensed in all the states of America. The clinical health counselors have to abide by precise Ethics, codes and standards for practicing professionally. The ethics and standards for professional practice in mental health counseling profession includes, commitment to clients, a sound relationship with the client, to make sure that the information of client is confidential etc.

There are many services provided by the clinical mental health counselors. These include; diagnosis and assessment of disorder of client, making treatment plans and implementation techniques, therapy should be brief and solution focused, people with substance and alcohol abuse should be treated accordingly, to conduct psycho educational and preventive programs, and be able to conduct crisis management.

This research study reveals that educational requirement of master's degree in any mental health study is necessary for a licensure qualified mental health professional/counselor. It also divulges that the mental health counselors can adopt different therapies for treatment of clients, among them the most common is talk therapy.

We are living in a highly managed care environment; in such an environment the responsibility of mental health counselors is to meet the challenges.
