Selected Article

The article that is selected for that study is “Nurses' Practice Environments, Error Interception Practices, and Inpatient Medication Errors”.

Problem Statement

The problem statement of the study is based on four nursing practices paying attention on intercepting and identifying medication errors:

Determining the rationale for each ordered medication;

In order to ensure that families as well as patients were well-informed concerning the medical treatment so that un-explained variances could be questioned;

Asking for that physician to re-write orders when inappropriate abbreviations were used;

Comparing independently the patient record as well as the record of medication administration at the starting of the shift of nurse.

Purpose of Research

The purpose of the study was to know is the errors that took place in the process of medication are threat to the safety of patients. For that reason, the purpose of the research was to find out the associations among the characteristics of the staffing levels of nurses, practice environment of nursing, error interception practice of the nurses, and non-intercepted rates of the errors that take place in the process of medication in acute care hospitals.

Review of the Literature

Nurses are more frequently engaged in error interception practices when they worked in a supportive practice environment, one that encouraged teamwork between physicians and nurses, offered continuing education opportunities, and valued nurses' contributions to hospital and unit-level decisions. Medication errors cause more than 7000 deaths of inpatient in a year in the US and are the mainly general reason of avoidable unfavorable patient events. Nurses play a critical role in identifying and intercepting medication errors regardless where the error originates at the dispensing, transcribing, prescribing or administration stages (Flynn, Liang, Dickson, Xie & Suh, 2012).

Theoretical Framework

This study is based on the quantitative research; the quantitative research is one in which data are collected and analyzed quantitative variables. The quantitative research is about to describe behavior in the form of models, correlations, and numerical forms as accurately as possible and make it predictable. This generally entails a survey or observation of as large and representative random sample, using methods such as the written survey questionnaire or the quantitative interview the numerical characteristics of one or more of certain characteristics measured. These readings are together or with other variables correlated and the results are then generalized to the population. Often a predetermined hypothesis based on the data is checked. The information gain is on quantitative methods in the data ...
