Research Design for Desktop Virtualization

Justify Research Design of Desktop Virtualization

Statement of the Problem

Energy consumption of the burgeoning computing infrastructure all over the world has drawn important attention from different researchers, especially the consumption of data centers. Hence, the problem statement identified for this research is 'How effective virtualization is in reducing power consumption, especially for large data centers?'

Purpose of the Research

The current research seeks to understand whether shifting to desktop virtualization can reduce energy consumption of data centers compared to workstation-based levels, reducing the costs of the data centers.

Research Questions and Hypothesis

The main research question is how does desktop virtualization affect energy consumption of data centers? The following questions guide the answering of these questions:

RQ1. Considering the effects of computing resources from a pool of workstations, can shifting to desktop virtualization reduce energy consumption of data centers?

RQ2. Is centralized desktop virtualization better for reducing energy consumption levels compared to workstation-based virtualization?

RQ3. How does desktop virtualization reduce the operating costs of the data centers?

Hypotheses

H1. Shifting to desktop virtualization can reduce energy consumption of data centers.

H2. Centralized desktop virtualization is better for reducing energy consumption levels compared to workstation-based virtualization.

H3. Desktop virtualization reduces the cost of data centers' operations through energy savings.

Definition of Constructs

Desktop Virtualization

Desktop virtualization implies the process of separating personal computer (PC) environment from the client-server model of computing.

Data Centers

A data center implies a facility used to house computer systems and the associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems.

Research Method

A historical descriptive analysis using secondary data will be the research approach to understand the impact of desktop virtualization system on energy costs of data centers. Historical descriptive analysis using secondary data will be conducted to serve the purposes of the study (Boomer, M-Keefer & Sabovik, 2010). By employing historical descriptive analysis using ...
