Introduction

J Sainsbury is involved in business of retailing, financial services, and property investment businesses in the UK. The company's retail stores and website offers a range of food and non-food products primarily under the Sainsbury's brand. In addition, it provides banking services like insurance, credit cards, savings products, and loans. The retailing segment of the company serves over 19 million customers weekly through a network of 872 stores including 335 convenience stores and 537 supermarkets. The supermarkets offer 30,000 varieties of food products, non-food products and services. The segment also operates internet-based delivery website, Sainsbury's online. The website reaches out to nearly 90% of UK households. Over 8,000 non-food products were also incorporated in the website recently.

Financial services segment consists of the operations of Sainsbury's Bank (trading as Sainsbury Finance). The bank is a joint venture between J Sainsbury and Lloyds Banking Group. According to the company's annual report, its segment revenues solely comprise of retail business and hence the financial reporting is based on one segment.
