Introduction

The Spanish writer and famous painter Salvador Dali was a surrealist movement member at one time. He was born in Figueres (Spain) and studied at Madrid School of Fine Art. Dali was not only a Catalan painter but also an illustrator, draughtsman, writer, sculptor and film maker. He was best known due to his flamboyant personality and fantastic imagery and was the most prolific artist of the 20th century.

Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali y Domenech, in short, Salvador Dali was born at 08:45 on May 11, 1904 in the morning, in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Figueres is located sixteen miles away in the principality of Catalonia from the French border known as foothills of the Pyrenees. Dali was born from a family of a respected notary. His mother was a Roman Catholic, and his father was a Republican and atheist. In memory of his recent dead brother, he was given the name Salvador. This had a profound effect, with the projection of his own persona and his subsequent experimentation with identity may have developed himself for an early understanding as 'a reply, a double, an absence' (Dali, pp. 92-96).

Dali began to build up his own style in the strange subjects of his fantasy world, executed in an extremely precise manner. He drew objects with painstaking exactness, engulfed in an oppressive perspective space and existed with other objects in weird juxtaposition, which recede tilt sharply upward too rapidly. He applied to small objects bright colors and with large patches of dull color. His personal style was evolved increasingly from his contact with surrealism and from the combination of his influences.

Dali displayed as a painter with unusual technical facility and discovered an enormous number of artistic styles, as an art student in Barcelona and Madrid. In late 1920s, two major events brought his major artistic style into development: writing on the erotic significance imagery on the discovery of Sigmund Freud, and the Paris Surrealists affiliation, a writers and artists group who established reasons of man's subconscious “greater reality”. Dali began hallucinatory states in him and brought up images from his subconscious mind through a process known as “paranoiac critical” (McNeese, pp. 25-37).
