Introduction

There are different forms of conflicts in one's life. Some people effectively deal with their conflicts while some succumb to the pressures of the conflict. There are many people in this world who instead of successfully handling and pulling out from the conflict, remain in that constant state and give up struggling. There are many movies on the subject of conflicts. The movies deal with how the characters face their conflicts and get out from it. One such movie is titled, Black Snake Moan. The Black Snake Moan is written and directed by Craig Brewer, produced by Stephanie Allain and John Singleton. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci, and Justin Timberlake. This paper discusses one of the scenes of the movie and analysis it as per the conflict theory and self disclosure.

Scene Selected

The scene selected for the analysis is the scene when Lazarus plays a tune of blues and narrates his demons to Rae while playing the guitar. In this scene, both of the main characters go through their demons. Lazarus goes through his story while playing the guitar and narrates his feelings to Rae, while Rae gets flashbacks of her abusive life as the thunder rolls on outside.

Plot Summary of the Movie

This is a story about a man named Lazarus who is a farmer and a blues musician from the southern United States. Lazarus is a deeply religious man whose life turns upside down when his wife leaves him for his brother. He drowns his sorrows by drinking heavily. Lazarus was once a successful blues musician. Now he is bitter, broke and stands before the ruins of his marriage. The other main character of the movie is Rae who is a young nymphomaniac. Rae's boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) leaves for deployment with the 196th Field Artillery Brigade, Tennessee National Guard, and in his absence, she has bouts of promiscuity and drug use.

In a party, Ronnie's friend Gill tries to seduce Rae but she refuses. After that Gill becomes angry and beat her severely and throws her out of his car. Lazarus finds her unconscious on the road and brings her to his house. He cares for her and also finds out about her past inappropriate activities (Dujsik, 2007). He vows to keep her and change her behavior. He then holds her captive in chains, to bring her back to the right path. Rae offers him sex, which Lazarus refuses; instead he wants to save her soul. Gradually, both of them open and entrust their destinies. They form a good relationship with each other. Rae starts living with Lazarus on her will after he releases her from the chains. Ronnie is released after a short time because of anxiety from the army, returns and learns from Gill, that Rae has had several men during his absence.
