Should the U.S. Build more nuclear power plants for an energy source

Introduction

The debate on nuclear power stations continues. Should America build more stations? Why? How much will this cost? Is it worth it? Is it the only option? These are the questions that have to be answered. There are many pro nuclear and anti-nuclear groups making their voices heard that it is hard to consider the real facts. In this assignment, I will answer the previous questions and discuss whether, in my opinion, nuclear power is the way forward.

There are presently sixteen nuclear power plants in America, out of which half are under the control of British nuclear fuels while the other half is administered by the British energy. The power stations that are currently run by the British fuels will close in 2010 and those of British energy by 2023. The power stations have crossed the 20-25 years life expectancy quite a long ago. In America no new building of Nuclear power station has been developed and the most of the nuclear reactors are likely to be closed in the coming 20 years. If this happens than there will only be one power plant in Suffolk up till 2035. The authorities plan to shift to other renewable sources of energy. These renewable sources of energy will replace the nuclear power production and decrease the reliance of America on fossil fuels foe the production of energy.

However, despite these plans by the government, many experts have advised the government to build more nuclear power stations in order to meet the targets of green house emissions. But is this the way to go? most of the people are not much concerned about the nuclear power. As long as people see the lights around them, they remain contented and they are not much concerned that from where it comes. To them electricity is all the same whether it comes from wind, gas, nuclear and goal. However, the plan to build more nuclear power stations should not be over looked. It is easy to assume that new power stations are a good idea as they will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These new power stations will affect the public directly and it is important to listen to all the facts and decide whether it is in fact a good idea.

The first important factor in this regard is money. If the government decides to make more power plants then everybody will have to pay almost $150 per year as a “nuclear tax”, which will become the part of our electricity bill. But everyone one us is already paying about 800 Us dollars in order to cover up the costs of dismantling the present power stations. On the other hand, if the government decides to embark on the policy of adopting cheap and simple measures like making most of renewable energy and energy efficiency, most of our business and household electricity bills will fall in a very significant ...
