Sleep deprivation has numerous affects on the shift workers. This is specially the case for the night shift workers. This effects their work as well as their families and friends, which are all discussed in detailed within the paper. Since this paper is based on the human factor, the psychological aspect has also been provided and how deprivation of sleep tends to effect the mindset and decision making of shift workers. Medically, sleep deprivation has a lot effects on the mind of an individual, including lack of focus and depression. It is important to note that sleep effects the performance of the shift workers. Introduction

The condition of a human being of not being able to get enough sleep is known as sleep deprivation. It is considered that such a condition could be either acute or chronic. A state of chronic sleep-restriction could be a major cause of fatigue, sleepiness in the day time, weight gain, weight loss and even clumsiness. In addition to that, it is important to note that it also tends to negatively affect the cognitive function of a human being as well as its brain. For a human being, it is completely impossible to be sleepless for a long period of time, unless until it suffers from familial insomnia.

There are at least ten million American people who tend to be engaged in working in shifts. These people tend to effected and the number of people who suffer from lack of sleep is increasingly on a routine basis. There are numerous symptoms as well as causes of sleep depreciation (Kushida, C. A. 2005). In addition to that, there are many long term effects on the physical self as well as the mental state of an individual due to lack of sleep. It is commonly known that sleep deprivation is generally caused when you do not get sleep enough as required by your body. Every living thing requires sleep. However, it is an important thing to note that the time of sleep required by different age groups may vary. For example an adult may only require 6 to 8 hours of sleep on a daily basis, whereas a small child may require 10 to 12 hours of sleep on a daily basis. Thus, in every way and for everyone, regardless of the age group, the need for sleep is a must.
