Integrated Social Learning

Social Studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. The main aim of the study is to assist students and young people develop strong decision making skills. Social Studies cover different aspects of life and give thorough knowledge to the students about these aspects.

Social Studies is one of the main subjects taught through grade 12 in schools across the nation. Social Studies is not a name given to a single subject, but it covers various disciplines such as history and geography because it is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. It is sometimes also taught as a separate discipline based within the department of social studies.

Integrated K-12 social studies programs include knowledge, skills, and attitudes within and across disciplines. This program includes many varying form of different disciplinary integration. Children learn social studies through integration of several disciplines at primary level of education. Teachers motivate students to learn about the history, science and language arts in order to enhance the learning of the students. In the middle and higher level of schooling, specific programs and plans are designed as interdisciplinary courses linked to specific courses including geography, economics and political sciences (Cuthrell, K., and P. Yates, 2007).

Social Studies program help student develop experience and knowledge base by learning about different reality based cases. Each discipline and program gives a great insight about the various experiences that had happened in the past.

Text Book Learning of Social Studies

Social Studies in text books cover different case studies, learning on different aspects of life including geography, history and economics. Each subject and concept learned starts from a specific perspective. It explores the effects and the reasons behind the events in the past and then discusses those reasons. Advanced text books of Social Studies also include political science studies which discuss and explore various political happenings and events.

The theme behind developing Social Studies text books is that students must be able to understand and apply the various concepts and historical theories they learned. The history books include all the details about the particular event of the history and its origin. The text first defines the source of the event, address and analyzes the concept's development over time. It discusses in depth about the origin of the event mentioning the name of the country where it started and what are its linkages with other countries.

Political sciences discuss the various concept used in politics with the help of examples. It is very important to for the student to learn political concepts in order to reduce the gap between the ideal and reality. Social Studies text also includes the discipline of sociology in order to determine and analyze the role of individuals, groups and institutions.
